Born in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1964.
Fernández studies began between the fields of physics and mathematics. She studied Graphic Arts at Boston University in 1982. From 1983 to 1985 she attended the Universidad Católica Andrés Bello, where she studied Education, specializing in physics and mathematics. She later studied graphic design at the Instituto Neumann in Caracas, graduating in 1989. From 1990 to 1993 she attended ag fronzoni’s Scuola Bottega in Milan, Italy, where she took courses in landscape and graphic design.
She worked as an independent designer in Italy from 1990 to 2000, where she collaborated with different companies and projects, like Astucificcio ISAAC Guidizzolo (Mantua) and Cini&Nils (Milan). She worked on production and the graphic image of the company Agape (Mantua), on the graphic proposal for the Concurso Telecom Italia presented by the company Armando Testa (Milan), and with ag fronzoni Studio (Milan) on the project for Revista Zero. From these studies and experiences, Magdalena developed a rigorous relation with line and structure. In the mid 1990s, she started creating stainless steel sculptures which invited spectators to move through and around them. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Fernández started using digital media to include moving images to her work.
She has taught courses and workshops in plastic arts, at undergraduate and graduate levels, at the Instituto Universitario de Estudios Superiores de Artes Plásticas Armando Reverón (IUESAPAR) in Caracas, Venezuela and more recently at the Instituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia in Italy and at the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey in Mexico, as well as in other institutions in Caracas, Maracaibo, Mérida and El Salvador.
